Fujitaro Kubota: Minidoka's Chief Gardener with Anna Tamura and Barb Yasui Wednesday, October 5, 2022
6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. via Zoom In the midst of the desert concentration camp at Minidoka during WWII, Fujitaro Kubota created a garden. This extraordinary act of resistance with beauty was repeated in internment camps throughout the country. Join us for this online presentation by Anna Tamura from National Parks Service, facilitated by KGF volunteer Barb Yasui.
Anna Tamura is a landscape architect and planning portfolio manager for the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service. She coordinates development of planning portfolios for the more than sixty national parks in the Western states and Pacific Islands. Focusing on complex cultural landscapes and civil rights sites, she has managed several projects related to the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans (Minidoka National Historic Site, Manzanar National Historic Site, Tule Lake Unit, Honouliuli National Monument, and the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial). A founding member of the annual Minidoka Pilgrimage, Tamura’s family members were incarcerated at Minidoka and Tule Lake. Her essay of the same title is published in our book, Spirited Stone: Lessons from Kubota’s Garden. Barbara Yasui is a 3rd generation Japanese American who is interested in Japanese American history & social justice issues. She is a retired educator who works with Densho to collect the stories of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during World War II and to teach about the incarceration. Learn more: In early August, 2022 KTVB in Boise, ID aired a feature about the 80th anniversary of Minidoka which is a wonderful introduction to the context of the incarceration of the Japanese there during World War II. Check out the video if you are interested in learning more. Limited to 100 participants. Registration is required. |
